What Are Essential Oils?

What is an Essential Oil?

Essential oils are concentrated aromatic oils, distilled from leaves, needles, flowers, bark, roots or other plant parts. The oils are distilled by either steam or water, citrus oils are cold pressed or steam distilled from citrus rinds.

A Little Goes a Long Way.

Essential oils, also referred to as EO's are highly concentrated. Most EO's have a pleasant smell, but it's important to get educated on what the oil does and what its used for before using it topically.

Just to show you how concentrated the oils are, one drop of Young Living's peppermint oil equals to approximately 28 cups of peppermint tea.

Benefits of Essential Oils

Essentials oils have helped lives for thousands of years. Benefits vary from cosmetic, spiritual and dietary uses. China, Greece, Rome, Persia, Egypt, and parts of Europe have a history of using essential oils.

In India, they used cinnamon, ginger, myrrh, and sandalwood. In Greece, they would use an ointment of myrrh help the soldiers fight off infections.

EO's can vary in quality and pricing. Things to consider when purchasing an oil is the distilling quality standards and how much of the oil if botanical and how much is just a filler oil. For example,
more lavender is sold than is produced. So it's highly likely not all lavender oil is pure lavender.

How to Choose Your Essential Oil?

Make sure its pure and does not have any additives or synthetics.

Do you know if the company tests the quality of their oils? Do you know where its sourced? What is their process for quality control?

You also should evaluate how long the company has been around. The longer they've been around, the more likely they are having perfected their process.

Storing your Essential Oils

Essential oils oxidize, deteriorate and can lose their therapeutic properties over time. Citrus oils will oxidize and lose smell as quickly as six months. The best is for them to be stored in dark glass to keep sunlight out. Do not place oils in plastic bottles as it will eat the plastic; this would also happen if the lid on a glass bottle is plastic, the lid would get damaged over time as you drink from it. Store your essential oils in a dark, cool place.

Skin

You can apply essential oils on your skin. The oils are fat soluble, so they immediately get absorbed into the skin. It's best to use a carrier oil when applying to the skin. Good carrier oils are jojoba oil, coconut oil, and almond oil. You can use on your wrists, temples, bottom of feet, or behind ears.

Inhaling Essential Oils

Rub 2-4 drops into the palms of your hands and place hands over the nose to inhale the oils. You can also choose to inhale via steam. Boil a few cups of water, place in a bowl, and add 2-4 drops of oil in the water. Put your nose about 12 inches away from the bowl, cover your head with a towel and slowly inhale the steam.

Another option is using a diffuser. There are an abundance of electronic diffusers on the market today. Using diffusers is also an excellent way to get rid of candles and use sweet aromatic oils to freshen your home smell.

Bath

Consider adding essential oils to your bath is a great way to make your time more relaxing. You can add the oil to plain Epsom salts. Doing this allows for the oils to dissolve with the salts as they will not dissolve as well if you drop oil directly in the water.

There are many uses for using essential oils. You can use them to clean your home, alleviate kiddos colds, and so many more uses.

Essential Oils at Home

Cleaning with Thieves household cleaner to clean various parts of your home, from your kitchen countertops, mirrors, floors, bathtub, toilet bowls and so much more.

Non-Toxic Bathroom Cleaner with (Thieves Household Cleaner)

Half a cup (1/2) of Thieves of concentrated household cleaner
Three cups (3) of baking soda
Squeezable bottle (you can use an old dish soap bottle)

To make cleaner, mix all ingredients and if it's too thick add some water to liquify it. Then pour it into your squeezable bottle.

Before you use the cleaner, shake the bottle well and squirt on sinks, tubs, toilets and anywhere else to get some deep cleaning.

Non-Toxic Glass Cleaner with (Thieves Household Cleaner)
lass and Mirror Cleaner

Use a glass bottle to store your (preferably a dark glass) glass cleaner. Mix one (1) capful of Thieves Household Cleaner, five (5) drops of Citrus Fresh or any other citrus oil, one (1) teaspoon of white vinegar, and three (3) cups of water. Shake bottle to combine ingredients and get ready for streak free windows and mirrors. I suggest you use a lint-free cloth to make sure you get the best results.

Freshen air at home

All candle addicts, please raise your hand! I must admit it I'm a recovering candle addict. But I've ditched the bad habit by freshening the air in my home by using essential oils and diffuser. Candles are mostly made of paraffin wax, which can create a toxic benzene and toluene when burned. These are two known carcinogens. This toxicity is similar to diesel fuel fumes. Most candles also have artificial scents and dyes, that are released when candles are burned.
